Kathy Jo's Story
Nosy website, all up in my business. OK ...
After high school, I got a B.A. in Theology from a conservative, evangelical, right-wing, Reagan-and-Bush-loving (that would be George HW) institution, which rendered me almost completely unemployable. But boy, I felt smart. Wonderful introduction to adult life: I thought I was smarter than everyone, and the world just laughed, and laughed, and laughed...
Humbled, I enrolled in a Master's program at Loyola University in 1991 to get a master's and a teaching certificate. That took me about 5 years to do, and while doing that, I worked in public relations and not-for-profit administration.
Began teaching in 1994 and directing high school theatre in 1995. The first 5 years kicked my butt really hard -- that, and I took on way too much.
From 1999 until 2002, I stepped back from my teaching career for a couple of years. Worked in PR and marketing again, focusing primarily on the Arts. Lived in San Francisco for awhile, doing PR and event planning for galleries, performance artists, dance co...Expand for more
mpanies and experimental theatre. That was incredibly engaging but paid little or nothing, so I went to work for a corporation in 2001 that provided consulting services to the power industry, thinking I'd actually get paid that way. and BAM! What a year to be working in the power industry! 911 happened, and then Enron. Man, did I get an education that year.
But I'm not a corporate person, and I hated some aspects of that life. In 2002, I returned to public education, working in an inner city Chicago school, directing high school theatre. In 2005, I took a sabbatical from my position in Chicago, moved to New York, and did a 1 year post-grad in a program at CUNY although I was still able to teach part-time in a Catholic high school in the Bronx.
Since then, I'm still teaching, and still directing. I've lived all over the place in the past 4 years and although I'm exhausted from a lot of transition, I would not trade my experiences. I returned to Indiana in 2008, and now live, direct, and teach in South Bend.
